Chickees are Native American homes used primarily in Florida by tribes like the Seminole Indians. The Chickee roof uses various types of fronds overlapping each other to shed water. They can be very watertight. Chickee houses consisted of thick posts supporting a thatched roof and a flat wooden platform raised several feet off the ground. They are still common in the backyards of many South Florida homes. They do not have any walls. During rainstorms, Florida Indians would lash tarps made of hide or cloth to the chickee frame to keep themselves dry, but most of the time, the sides of the structure were left open.
