BUR Flat Roof
Built-Up-Roofs have been around for about 160 years, and they are usually composed of alternating layers of bitumen or asphalt and reinforcing plies, also called layers or fabric. When installed correctly, these create a watertight roof that can last for decades. BUR's are not fancy, but even on these, one of the most basic forms of Roofing, JW Roofing does the little things right, such as covering the bleed-out with granules while the asphalt is hot. This simple step can add years of life to the critical area at the lap. This protects the exposed black asphalt from the sun's rays. If this area is left exposed, the black area will heat up faster than the white cap sheet, and over time the asphalt will crack and wear. We also coat our flashing to add a level of rust protection and as an additional water barrier. These are just a few of the differences that our roofing experience gives you. JW Roofing would like to know that for some applications a BUR is the best option for your low slope or flat roof, but it is also one of the most dangerous types of roofing to install. A hot mop roof requires the use of a kettle which heats hundreds of pounds of asphalt to 450 degrees. The dangers involved with using a sticky asphalt that is hotter than some cooking oils are evident. We at JW Roofing do offer BUR roofing, but we also offer more modern options such as energy efficient white TPO, and white EPDM roofs. Speak to one or our estimators or contractors for more information, as TPO and EPDM can be excellent options for your roofing project. Additionally, many roofs may be candidates for roof restoration which can add a decade of life to your flat roof or low slope roof for a fraction of the cost of a new roof.
